AFCON Group Results 2024

The 2023/24 Africa Cup of Nations will be held between January 13 and February 11, 2024. Below are our predictions of how the results of AFCON groups will look like.

AFCON Results

Group A

We expect Nigeria and Ivory Coast to qualify from this group, but they must be wary of threats from Equatorial Guinea and Guinea-Bissau. Equatorial Guinea stand a chance to qualify as one of the best losers.

Group B

After claiming the silver medal in two of the last three AFCON editions, Egypt will try to win the competition for the 8th time. However, they face tough AFCON fixtures from Ghana, Mozambique and Cape Verde. Egypt and Ghana should conveniently secure a place in the next round.

Group C

Defending champions Senegal must fend off Cameroon, Guinea, and the Gambia in Group C. We expect the Lions of Teranga and 5-time winner Cameroon to get out of this group.

Group D

Two-time winner Algeria are favourites in Group D but face competition from Burkina Faso, Angola, and Mauritania. Burkina Faso and Angola are likely to give Algeria a tough test, but the three teams might qualify for the round of 16, with one finishing as one of the best losers.

Group E

South Africa and Tunisia have both won the AFCON title once, and they are favourites in this group. Mali are also experienced in the competition but may have to be in top form to qualify. On the other hand, it might be too much of a task to ask Namibia to qualify from this group.

Group F

Morocco will likely make it to the next round of the competition from Group F. One of Zambia and DR Congo might finish second while Tanzania must bring in their A-game to stand a chance.

AFCON Results for Malawi

Malawi did not qualify for the AFCON 2024, failing to make the competition for the 4th time. The Flames were in Group D of the AFCON qualifiers, finishing 3rd with 5 points. Malawi won only one of their 6 qualifying matches, drawing 2 and losing the other 3. Egypt and Guinea made it out of this group with 15 and 10 points, respectively.

Malawi have participated in three AFCON editions, crashing out of the group stages in 1984 and 2010. They got to the round-of-16 in 2021 before losing to Morocco 2-1.

AFCON Results for Malawi

Malawi have only qualified for the Africa Cup of Nations on three occasions: 1984, 2010, and 2021. Below are their AFCON results for the last five editions.

AFCON 2021

Malawi secured their highest-placed finish in an AFCON competition in the 2021 edition with a round-of-16 finish. The Flames finished 3rd in Group D with 4 points, behind Senegal and Guinea. They would secure a place in the next round as one of the best losers. However, they would eventually lose 2-1 to Morocco in the round of 16.

AFCON 2019

The Flames could not qualify for AFCON 2019 after falling short in the qualification. Malawi finished 3rd in Group B of the qualifying round behind Cameroon and Morocco.

AFCON 2017

Malawi finished last in their qualification group and could not qualify for AFCON 2017. They secured only 5 points from 6 games, finishing below Zimbabwe, Swaziland, and Guinea.

AFCON 2015

Malawi’s performance at the qualifiers wasn’t good enough to get them into AFCON 2015. The Flames finished 3rd in Group B of the qualification round behind Algeria and Mali, accruing only 7 points.

AFCON 2013

After making it past the first round of the qualifiers by beating Chad 4-3 on aggregate over two legs, Malawi fell short 0-3 to Ghana in the second round. As a result, they failed to qualify for the AFCON 2013.
